Unprecedented Invention by Young Georgians Transforms Gestures into Text Format

Ilia State University Business School held a business idea scholarship competition “Abitour” for entrants in May, where the teams of graduate students competed with each other to demonstrate their own innovative businesses. One of these is a device that will help hearing impaired persons to communicate.

“Doctrina” has interviewed one of the authors of the idea Mariam Charkhalashvili.

“MCE box” (“Make communication easy”) is the start-up idea by young Georgian girls. Its goal is to help hearing impaired persons to reach active communication with the public. Mariam Charkhalashvili, Sopho Petriashvili and Nini Shavdia are the authors of the project.  The young girls finished school this year and decided to participate in Ilia State University Business business idea scholarship competition.

The innovative device works on the following principle: people who use gestures stand before the screen and speak in the language of gestures, and their movement is displayed on the other side of the screen in textual form and on the other hand, the device will have “Google Voice Search”, and it will be possible to display the verbal text in the language of gestures. It will make easier for hearing impaired persons to communicate with other people.

According to Mariam Charkhalashvili, the device is mainly designed for public institutions, “Our equipment, which can be installed in various offices, companies, banks or restaurants, will make it easier for hearing impaired persons to communicate with the staff of the mentioned objects,” – Mariam Charkhalashvili said.

The girls say they thought about the problems facing the hearing impaired persons earlier, too. “Abitour” has enabled them to present their idea to the society and to gain a positive response, all the more because their device does not have analog. As for the prototype, its creation is related to certain finances. The girls plan to develop the idea and to find necessary resources.

Wooden Bags – Georgian Girls’ Successful Startup

,,Begels” – the startup project by two young Georgian girls. They have developed their idea with the help of the Georgia’s Innovations and Technologies Agency and now, their unique wooden bags are available to buyers. We have interviewed Natia Mgeladze, one of the authors of the idea.

Natia Mgeladze and Qeti Ubilava are the authors of the idea. They came up with the idea of creating the bags in 2015. The young girls had been thinking about it for 3-4 months, because the machines at FABLAB (Ilia State University Future Industrial Innovation Lab) mostly work on wood and organic glass, and they decided to make bags from wood. Later, the girls agreed that the synthesis of leather and wood would be much more original and beautiful. These kinds of bags are found in the collections of some of the famous designers, but the girls opted their bags for the Georgian market. In addition, the bags are engraved according to the client’s demand that makes them more distinguished.

The name of the project is interesting itself. According to Natia Mgeladze,  “Begels” raises the association of “Bag and Girls”, so the idea of the name has spontaneously emerged from here, and they both liked it very much. As for the realization of the products, the girls are able to deliver their products to the people through social networks and periodically, they hold exhibitions.

As for future plans, the authors plan to develop their startup. “It is necessary to constantly take care of the startup and offer novelty to customers. Otherwise, stability does not bring results. A few months ago, we came up with the idea of the bags with lamps, the final version of these bags will be ready in the summer,” – Natia Mgeladze said.

“Every Dollar Spent by US for Exchange Programs is Successful Expenditure”

Georgia is hosting various events celebrating the 25th anniversary of strategic partnership between Georgia and the United States of America.

Within the framework of the “Common Past, Common Future”, the US Alumni Leadership Forum was held at Ivane Javaskhishvili Tbilisi State University on April 28. The event was opened by Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili who delivered a welcoming speech. The meeting was also attended by United States Ambassador to Georgia Ian Kelly.

PM Kvirikashvili emphasized American academic communities’ great contribution to Georgia’s development and to the education of the future leaders of Georgia.  US Ambassador also drew attention to Georgian-US long-term successful relationship and noted that a very deep and well-connected relationship was established between the two countries within these 25 years.

The forum was also attended by Giorgi Shervashidze, Rector of Tbilisi State University. He noted that there are more than five thousand students who have received education in the US through these exchange programs. According to him, this fact once again emphasizes the efficiency of the cooperation between the two states.

“In 1987-1988, the first team of Tbilisi State University students has left for the US. All of them are very successful. Every dollar Americans have spent in this direction is a successful expenditure and hopefully, the [the US] will continue providing such large-scale assistance, “– he noted.

A discussion has also taken place within the US Alumni Leadership Forum. The event was attended by Koba Gvenetadze, President of the National Bank of Georgia, Nika Samkharadze, representative of the Georgian Parliament Administration and Eka Metreveli, President of Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies.

“Mecnieri.me” – Georgian Student’s Project Aims at Improving Children’ Cognition

“Mecnieri.me” ( scientist me ) is another new project that aims to create scientific experiments for kids and teenagers. These low-budget experiments are easy to conduct at home. The experiments help teens deepen their knowledge in the fields such as astronomy, geology, meteorology, computer science, physics, mathematics and engineering.

“Doctrina” has interviewed project author – Tako Basiashvili.

Tako Basiashvili, who is just 19 years old, is a second-year student of the department of  biochemistry at the San Diego State University. She has already participated in the implementation of the very responsible and interesting project.

The project – “Mecnieri.me”  is a cognitive online portal for children aged under 12 years of age. There are interesting and simple experiments placed into the portal. The main charm of these experiments is that each of them can be done by the supplies that are easily available at home.

In order to better understand the project, let’s take one of these simple experiments : “invisible ink”. This experiment requires only a sheet and lemon juice. If a child writes any word on a piece of paper with a lemon juice and then dries it nothing will appear on the paper, but in case of reheat it the written word will clearly be seen. The process is not only fun, but also cognitive, because children are able to find the process explanation on the site and to understand more about it. The website provides them with relevant information about the process.

Thus, they learn that the lemon juice, as well as other fruit juice, contains carbon compounds. These substances are invisible at room temperature, but in the heat they may dissolve and release the carbon. In case carbon meets air, oxidation process begins and the substance turns into open or dark brown colored substance, which is the experiment’s result.

The following simple experiment is ,,giant soap bubbles “.  Probably every child dreamed of having large soap balloons, which actually is not as difficult as it seems. In order to achieve our goal, we need to mix one cup of water with two tablespoons of dish washing liquid, a tablespoon of glycerin (available in pharmacies) and a teaspoon of sugar, the mixture should be kept in a closed container for 1-hour period, and then, we have to mix gently and start forming giant bubbles with flexible metallic sticks.

“Studying science and technology at an early age will support violation of stereotypes about these fields in our country and it will be the guarantee of future growth and success of the fields of science and technology, “- Tako Basiashvili said in her interview with “Doctrina”.
